A little over six weeks ago a new lay system hit the markets. It was titled “Steady Profits” and, as part of my duties for LTO, I got hold of a copy for review. It was delivered to my mailbox as an e-book, in other words a pdf file, and consisted of about 28 pages. As ever, and I loathe this, the first 10 pages were full of B.S!! I took one look at the “rules” and had a good mind to file it along with the hundreds of others that are destined for that mythical drawer.

Scenario: We have a good lay system and we want to maximise the profits. How can we do this? The usual answer is : Increase the stakes. Yes, this will work, however, we have better options. The answer to maximising profits is to use the under-estimated Staking Plans. I have outlined one or two in this blog that are simple to operate and will result in bigger profits, whilst protecting your bank.

I came across False Favourites lay betting by Jonathan Burgess in my mailbox on Friday and was immediately struck by the enormity of it. It’s an e-book consisting of well over 200 pages! Surprisingly, hardly any of the content was the usual Betfair rubbish.

A good start to my first week in charge of the lay betting section!

I penned a couple of articles, namely the introduction, and an article on laying favourites over 7 furlongs – the latter received a number of comments, something I hope will continue. (It’s easy; just click on the yellow quotation icon).

Seven furlongs is neither a sprint nor a mile – it’s one of those ‘in-between’ distances and not all courses have races of this length. It is a specialised trip, one that you’d think would favour the SP favourite. However, this just isn’t true. What I found during seven years of analysis, was that a lot of horses were either up or down in trip, and it is this that probably gives us the profitable edge.

The majority of races aren’t won by Favourites; on average they win about one race in three. There are just too many random factors to make racing an exact science. You can choose the best horse in a race but a no hoper goes onto win.

I hear from a lot of people who lay big outsiders in the Betfair horse racing markets at ridiculous prices. They tell me how they never win and that it’s easy money. Generally these gamblers think that the outcome is so unlikely that they are prepared to risk a large proportion of their betting bank on each bet.
